As part of Net Zero Week in Parliament 2026, the Energy Research Accelerator (ERA) will convene a high-level roundtable in Westminster to examine the UK’s position in the rapidly evolving global battery landscape. As energy storage becomes central to net zero and industrial growth, the discussion will focus on how the UK can strengthen competitiveness and capture greater economic value.

Key themes will include:

  • National challenges and global positioning
Supply chain security, access to critical minerals, domestic scale-up, and international competitiveness
  • The role of the UK battery ecosystem
Strengths in innovation and deployment, alongside key gaps and opportunities
  • Innovation and emerging technologies
Next-generation batteries and the role of universities in driving and translating research
  • Skills and workforce development
Building the talent pipeline needed across R&D and manufacturing
  • Policy and investment environment
How government can support growth through coordinated policy, funding, and strategy

Additional discussion will cover infrastructure and scale-up, sustainability and recycling, and the importance of cross-sector collaboration.

Attendees will include representatives from the battery manufacturing industry, leading academics in the sector, and end users of these technologies. MPs and peers are invited to attend and contribute to this important and timely conversation.

The roundtable will aim to identify clear, actionable priorities to strengthen the UK battery sector and support its role in the energy transition.
